GRANT REPORTING

STRATEGIC COMMUNICATION

JOHNS HOPKINS CENTER FOR COMMUNICATION PROGRAMS

Few colleagues realize that my formal training and background is in international health and development. After graduating with my Master of Public Health and Master of Social Work, I joined the Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs as a Program Officer. During my tenure I supported two Urban Reproductive Health Initiative (now The Challenge Initiative) projects, funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Traveling multiple times to Nigeria, I visited project sites, documented progress, and participated in annual planning with country representatives.

"Kim has exceptional communication and relationship skills and in-depth knowledge of her core technical areas. You could not have a better facilitator for capacity building and mentoring activities."

I found my footing as the bridge between the program team and the funders, eventually leading the external communications strategy and public relations efforts for NURHI, a five-year $40 million grant investment. Working with graphic and video design firms, I produced products that combined data and theory through a storytelling lens, advancing organizational goals, highlighting impact with stakeholders. This resulted in project learnings and research studies to be disseminated globally and for the project to be extended for an additional term. Later I parlayed this experience to serve the wider organization, presenting a plan to refresh the entire site, pitching newsworthy impact stories, and serving as the lead partner with video production firm, DDC International, to develop and produce a promotional video that elevated the non-profit’s profile and legacy.
